The olive is pruinose with numerous lenticels. When fully ripe, it is characterized by a dark wine-red color, with numerous yellowish-green spots and a characteristic dark dot in the center. The end-head is elliptical in shape, slightly asymmetrical with its maximum diameter towards the apex, a rough surface, and numerous fibrovascular bundles (>10). The cross-section is elliptical, the apex is pointed with a mucro, and the base is rounded. The 2-3 year-old shoots are yellowish-green in color. It is self-fertile but benefits from cross-pollination. In the historic olive groves of the Tiber Valley, it is intercropped with the Olivo Gentile di Anghiari. The cultivar is cold-resistant with highly consistent production. Cultivation techniques are similar to those of other cultivars.
It has a good yield at the mill and the quality of the oil is excellent with a medium fruitiness, with light green leafy sensations, light bitterness and spiciness in good harmony.
Distribution
Hilly areas of the Tuscan Tiber Valley with favorable exposure, including the municipalities of Anghiari, Caprese Michelangelo, Monterchi Pieve Santo Stefano, and Sansepolcro. It also includes the municipality of Bibbiana in Casentino, near Partina, and some municipalities in Umbria.
Together with the Olivo Gentile della di Anghiari, it is present in all the historic olive groves of the valley with centuries-old trees.
